Life Beyond Rehabilitation

September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn about life after injury and the importance of accessible services, spaces, and opportunities. At NeuAbility, it also brings attention to something central to our work: long-term health continues after rehabilitation.

Approximately 311,560 people in the United States live with traumatic spinal cord injuries, with an estimated 18,482 new injuries occurring each year, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center’s 2026 report. Each person has different experiences, priorities, and goals. Access to ongoing wellness services and community matters long after someone leaves the hospital.

Rehabilitation provides an essential foundation. What follows includes everyday life: working, spending time with friends, raising a family, pursuing interests, and maintaining health. People need opportunities to continue building the capacity and confidence to participate in the activities that matter to them.

NeuAbility bridges the gap between rehabilitation and lifelong wellness for people living with spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions. Our approach brings together:

  • Adaptive exercise to build strength, physical capacity, and readiness for everyday activities.

  • Integrative health services that complement exercise and support ongoing wellness.

  • Community continuity through lasting relationships, shared knowledge, and opportunities to connect.

These elements work together to support people in pursuing their own goals. Progress may mean making an everyday task more manageable, returning to a favorite activity, or developing a consistent routine that supports long-term health.

Awareness also means paying attention to barriers to participation. You can contribute by listening to people with lived experience, considering accessibility when planning events, and sharing resources that help people find ongoing support.

This September, we invite you to learn more about spinal cord injury and the role we all play in building accessible, connected communities. The conversation starts with awareness and continues through what we do throughout the year.
